Scott's Picks for Best Albums of 2006

  1. Fox Confessor Brings the Flood by Neko Case - Not only is this my top pick for 2006, but this is a desert island disc for me now as I couldn't imagine life without it. This is one of the best albums to fall asleep to as well. The writing is simply killer, although a lot of it is high-brow erudite stuff that I admit I don't always get. This is the first album by Neko Case that I've purchased.
  2. The Life Pursuit by Belle and Sebastian - I own four of their albums but I think this is their best one yet. This one probably has the most bad language on it (usually not very prominent, but I still can't play this one with the kids around). Still, the album is solid from top to bottom and just solidifies my love for this band.
  3. Eyes Open by Snow Patrol - I got into them on their last album, Final Straw which gets props for having one of the best songs EVER, "Chocolate". This album, however, is much more consistent and while "Chasing Cars" is one of the best songs of 2006 and also a major hit for them, I hope that others will listen to the album in its entirety because it really is ace.
  4. Surprise by Paul Simon - Paul's still quite a songwriter and while he may never turn out another Graceland, he still continues to write interesting songs.
  5. Under the Iron Sea by Keane - This is their follow-up to their strong debut, Hopes and Fears. This album isn't quite as good as that one, but it has its moments.
  6. Under the Covers Volume 1 by Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs - An interesting match-up, indeed, and while I haven't been attracted to Sweet's recent work, this pairing with Hoffs was a great idea. The covers they chose were good, with stand-outs "And Your Bird Can Sing", "Different Drum", and a simply SUPERB version of The Velvet Underground's "Sunday Morning".
  7. Highway Companion by Tom Petty - I'm a fan of albums that have a consistent thread throughout them and this one is a nice return to form for Mr. Petty. This album makes for great traveling music (thus, the title).
