Scott's Most-Disappointing Albums of 2010
- Suburbs by Arcade Fire
It's a good album, but it's incredibly derivative of both their own music as well
as other people's music. Arcade Fire die-hards will think it's a new masterpiece, but I'll take
the individuality of the songs off of their previous effort, "Neon Bible", versus their throw-back to
their album "Funeral" and its attempt at a cohesive theme. They seem to sacrifice on song quality
when aiming to weave that common thread amongst the songs.
- Scratch My Back by Peter Gabriel
Why can't Peter just come up with his own music? It's been years since his last original album release,
and where's the "I/O" album we were expecting as a follow-up to "Up", or even the "Son of Ovo" album? In any case,
the freebies that Peter's offered up, "Mirrorball" and "Flume", are pretty much the best things on this album.
He does an admirable cover of Arcade Fire's "My Body is a Cage", but he destroys just about everything else with a
pedestrian take on everyone else's great songs. One review I read said that after listening to this album, they were
going to listen to some Leonard Cohen to cheer themselves up.
- Mr. Sad Clown by The BoDeans
A decent Springsteen influence shows up which is enjoyable. Opening track "Stay" is a keeper, as is
"Headed for the End of the World". I'm usually evenly split between liking Kurt versus Sammy but Kurt's really
got the much better stuff on this album. They each contribute a couple of real clunkers in the middle such as Sammy's
"Cheesecake Pan" and Kurt's "Say Goodbye", and they never really recover after that.
